I had always loved HoMM2 graphics style over HoMM3 and I was very happy to discover your mod. Unfortunately I have been unable to experience it because of infuriating installation issue.
I followed the instruction throughly:
1. Installed a clean HoMM3 Complete from GOG.COM 2. Installed H3SW v0.8.1 3. When trying to run h3sw.exe i get this:
I suspect that this is related to Windows 10... Any clues???
P.S. - I tried switching off antivirus, running installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode - to no avail

Have your tried to run h3sw.exe in administrator mode? That may help.
Yes I have, still the same problem...
According to a these sites it may be ERA having trouble finding the correct files in your game directory. It may help manually creating the files in the game directory as described Here

Thanks Sir Albe I have done some experimenting with the newest iteration of ERA. It works fine but as soon as I install SW over it everything gets back to the first post and ASSERT VIOLATION. I had small success with mashing up bits of ERA and SW mod, so I could even start a random map Heroes2 style, but there were numerous bug and errors, so it is not the way...
There has to be something wrong with the files in SW install themselves... I don't know, maybe era.dll or something???

You shouldn't need to install ERA on top of H3SW as it is already included and things might not work out if there isn't combability between the ERA version of H3SW and the one you download (especially if it is ERA 3).
I am pretty confident that the H3SW installer is working as intended. My best bet is for you to start over with the installation.
1. Download H3 completed to a separate directory (another folder than your existing H3 folder) 2. Then install H3SW on top of this H3 directory 3. (Optional) If you still cannot run H3SW from this directory, then try installing HD mod on top of it.

Thanks Albe! Now I know the source of problems - It is ERA itself. The version included in the SW mod refuses to cooperate with my setup. ERA 2.8.8 seems to work fine. I managed to try a workaround:
1. Install HoMM3 Complete from GOG 2. Install ERA 2.8.8 3. Install H3SW mod files (not overwriting anything)
The success is partial however - the mod runs, however EVERY CITY of every faction produces Peasants... So there must be an issue of incompatibility with newer ERA builds....
i just wanted to chime in and say that i have the same problem on win 10 running version .8.2 (the latest currently).
--------------------------- Assert violation in file "D:\Soft\Programming\Delphi\Source\SRC\Units\_OLDER_\GameExt.pas" on line 407.
Error at address: $8B518A5. ---------------------------
this was installed onto a brand new install of the GOG version into a folder called HoMM3SW. i have another installation with the HOTA mod installed in the HoMM 3 Complete directory.
i've tried setting the Data Execution Prevention to ignore "H3SW_v0.8.2.exe" and then rebooting but that did not help.
i've tried deleting and re-installing everything from scratch several times this evening but nothing seems to work with the base procedure.
none of the other suggestions mentioned on this thread helps either.
so totally open to any ideas here.
thanks!
EDIT: oh, and H3SW - Map Editor.exe won't do anything at all. i double click on it or rt click on it and tell it to OPEN but the spinny circle comes out for 2 seconds and NOTHING comes up. there isn't even a program that crashed to kill.
Thanks for reporting this issue! It seems more wide spread than I initially suspected. As said before, it seems the trouble arises from the ERA 2 version that comes with H3SW.
Also, I can replicate the issue with H3SW and ERA 2.8.8 as described earlier. I will try to look for another ERA 2 version that can handle H3SW and hopefully works for you.
